Overview: This session is aimed at young riders who want to progress their riding ability and want to learn some new skills. It is the next step up from our Pedal Bike Club sessions, so if your child is under 8 please attend those first and speak to the coach to see if they are ready before booking cycle skills: these sessions will be more challenging and not all under 8s will be ready for this yet!
Session Details:
Age Group: This session is open to people aged 6-10 years - but please check with a coach if your child is under 8 and wants to move up to this session.
Session Duration: 1 hour
Bike and helmet hire: Bikes and helmets are included in the session cost if you need them, although you’re welcome to bring your own. If you need to borrow a bike from us, please arrive ahead of your session start time to allow us to help you get a bike and start the session on time.
Experience level: Riders must be able to ride independently - this means being able to start and stop on their own using brakes, and able to pedal in the direction that they want to go. If your child cannot ride independently, we have plenty of Learn to Cycle sessions available.
What to Bring:
Water and a snack
Comfortable clothing, gloves, plenty of layers, and waterproofs (sessions will run in bad weather). We recommend not wearing skirts or dresses as these can impede movement on the bike. Closed toed shoes must be worn: no sandals, sliders or flip flops please!
Important to know:
Please arrive 15 minutes before the session start time to complete the sign on process, to ensure that the session can start promptly.
Latecomer policy: If you arrive more than 10 minutes after your session start time, your child will not be allowed to join the session (we will do our best to move your booking to another session where possible). This is to help keep the children, parents and riders safe and to ensure everyone gets the most out of their sessions.
Lights: Please remember your own bike lights in winter months (October - March): this session will take place on the inner track, which is lit by temporary portable lights through the winter - in order for us to be able to use as much space as possible and see each other clearly, we ask that participants have lights on their bike for this session.
Only those signed-up and participating in the session will be allowed across the main track and into the centre. Parents/carers and non-riding siblings are encouraged to sit and watch from the banked seating of the velodrome (and enjoy tasty drinks and snacks from Jan's Cafe when open) but please do not leave the overall site.
Track Crossings: Once the child has crossed the track with the coach to start the session, recrossing to the outside of the track will only be permitted at the end of the session and accompanied by the coach. There is one toilet in track centre.
Before the session starts, please ensure that your young person has used the toilet, has a snack in their pocket and a water bottle with them. The coach will be able to help carry things into track centre.
Location:
Inner Track: Cycle skills is held on our flat central space (MUGA) and is for geared or single speed bikes with brakes - NOT fixed gear track bikes.
Meeting Point: Meet at the designated inner track meeting point: at the thick blue line next to the blue seating.
