Overview: A great session for anyone who wants to learn the balance and coordination skills required for safe and successful riding. If your child cannot currently ride independently, this is the session for you.

We encourage parents/guardians to work alongside their kids to help them gain confidence and balance, with the goal being unassisted and independent pedalling. Riders who are learning with their own balance or pedal bikes are welcome too. Stabilisers are not permitted, as our method involves learning without pedals to gain balance and co-ordination on a balance-bike. This session will take learners up to the point that they are able to cycle unassisted - if your child can pedal but is struggling with starting, stopping or turning, this session is still for you.

Session Details:

  • Age Group: This session is for people aged 2-11 years.
  • Session Duration: 1 hour
  • Bike and helmet hire: Bikes and helmets are included in the session cost if you need them, although you’re welcome to bring your own.
  • Experience: No previous experience is necessary.

What to Bring:

  • Each young learner must bring at least one parent/guardian to assist in their session.
  • Water and a snack
  • Comfortable clothing, gloves, plenty of layers, and waterproofs (sessions will run in bad weather). We recommend not wearing skirts or dresses as these can impede movement on the bike. Closed toed shoes must be worn: no sandals, sliders or flip flops please!

Important to know:

  • Latecomer policy: If you arrive more than 10 minutes after your session start time, your child will not be allowed to join the session (we will do our best to move your booking to another session where possible). This is to help keep the children, parents and riders safe and to ensure everyone gets the most out of their sessions.
  • Track Crossings: Once the child and adult have crossed the track with the coach to start the session, recrossing to the outside of the track will only be permitted at the end of the session and accompanied by the coach. There is one toilet in track centre.
  • Waiting List: We operate an automated waiting list for our sessions, and you can see how many other people are on the waiting list before you join it. You will automatically be notified if a place becomes available, at which point you have 24h to complete your booking. The last opportunity people have to cancel or move a spot is 2h before the session, and then you have until 30mins before the session to make your booking. We cannot answer emails enquring about your position on the waiting list or the likelihood of getting a place.

Location:

  • Inner Track: Sessions take place on the square inside the main track
  • Meeting Point: Meet at the designated inner track meeting point: beyond the pavilion, at the thick blue line on the floor between the blue seating and the picnic area. The coach will invite riders to cross the track when they are ready. We will usually start the Learn to Cycle sessions with bike fitting for anyone who needs one: most of our smaller bikes are kept inside the track.
